Visit & Study Japan Grant Program 2019
2019年８月29日（木）にVSJ (Visit And Study Japan)プログラムの発表会が日米協会で開催された。本プログラム奨学生の一人であるハーバード大学在学のリア・ジャスティン・ヒニッチさんに「歌川広重『狂歌入東海道』（佐野喜版）における狂歌と浮世絵の関係性を探る」のテーマで研究発表頂いた。発表では一般にはあまり知られていない狂歌が得中に草書で書かれた東海道五十三次を取り上げ、絵中にある狂歌を読むことで浮世絵を捉えるイメージが変わる重要性が説明された。リアさんは日本独自の狂歌の意味や「韻」の面白さを、現代日本語を介さずに直接翻訳した英文を添え表現した。今回の日本滞在についてリアさんは、狂歌の美術館を訪れて専門家の話を聞くことができ大変有意義であったと述べた。今後はアメリカに帰国後、ボストン美術館の研究者ともに『狂歌入東海道』の研究書を発行する予定だ。
On Thursday, August 29, 2019, the VSJ (Visit and Study Japan) program presentation was held at the AJS office in Tokyo. In this time, one of the scholars of AJS, Ms. Leah Justin Hinich, a student at Harvard University, gave a research presentation on the theme of “Exploring the relationship between ‘Kyōka’ (comical poetry) and ‘Ukiyo-e’ made by Hiroshige Utagawa”.
Ms. Leah mainly explained an importance which reading “Kyōka” can change the image of “Ukiyo-e” that readers perceive. Ms. Leah added her own English interpretation of those “Kyōka”by explaining unique implications including indigenous rhymes. Ms. Leah said that it was very meaningful to be able to talk with experts by visiting Kyōka museums in Japan. After returning to the United States, Ms. Leah plans to publish an English translation of “Kyōka iri Tokaido” with the staff of Boston Museum of Fine Arts.
