Tim Griffin氏（アーカンソー州副知事、Brunswick社Senior Councilor)対談
2019年12月2日、ホワイト&ケース法律事務所にて、米アーカンソー州副知事のTim Griffin氏をゲストにお迎えし、今年最後の月例会が開催された。共和党の連邦下院議員として党内の要職を歴任され、ブッシュ政権では大統領特別補佐官(政務)を経験された経験から、来年に控える大統領選や日米関係を中心に、共和党関係者の視点からお話し頂いた。
特に来年の大統領選挙に関しては、株価の上昇・失業率の低下をはじめとして経済が非常に好調であることなどから、トランプ大統領にとって追い風になるのではないかという鋭い分析は非常に示唆に富むものであった。
また質疑応答の中で、Griffin氏は、トランプ政権・共和党に対立的なメディアもあるが、意見の違いに関わらず目を通すべきであり、意識して市中に出て色々な人の声を聞いたりすることで、本当のことが見えてくる。さらに普段から意識して、個人的な問題と政治課題は分けて捉えるべきであり、議会では喧々諤々の議論をするが、議会が終われば共和党も民主党も関係ないという、謂わゆる”アメリカの政治家”でいることが重要であると政治家としての信条を語った。
その他にも会場から質問が相次ぎ、2019年を締めくくるに相応しい盛り上がりのある月例会となった。

The AJS invited Mr. Tim Griffin for the December Lecture Program, held at the conference room of White & Case LLP on 2nd December, 2019. He mainly talked about the presidential election of 2020 and the US-Japan relations from the viewpoint of Republicans. Especially for next year’s presidential election, the sharp analysis that President Trump has an advantage because the economy was very suggestive.
During the Q&A session, Mr. Griffin talked that we should always be aware of personal issues and political issues separately, and argue violently in the parliament but there is no distinction between enemies when the parliament ends.
In addition, questions from the audience were one after another, and it was a monthly meeting suitable for closing 2019.
