5th Meeting of The Next Generation’s Roundtable in Tokyo
2020年3月23日に次世代ラウンドテーブル（NGRT）3期の第5回目のミーティングが六本木ヒルズクラブで開催された。今回はワシントンD.C.のシンクタンクである米国先端政策研究所（CAP）の上級研究員であるグレン・フクシマさんにお越し頂いた。
今回のテーマは「アメリカ大統領選挙2020と日米関係の予測」であった。フクシマ氏は基調講演の冒頭で、今回の大統領選挙は戦後最も重要な選挙といっても過言ではないと述べ、その理由を示すためにジョー・バイデン氏のスーパーチューズデーでの復活劇、バイデン連合の形成、コロナウイルス（COVID-19）の拡大の３つの出来事について解説した。その後参加者らは各テーブルで、「トランプ政権／バイデン政権それぞれの日米関係はどうなるか」「どちらの政権のほうが良い日米関係をもたらすか」「次期アメリカ政権に対して日本の政府・ビジネス・メディアなどはどう対策をとるべきか」について議論し、選挙の予測を行った。フクシマ氏からの最後のスピーチでは、両国の若者が政治に関心を持ち、様々な視点から日米関係についてフランクに議論することの大切さが強調された。
The 5th meeting of the Next Generation’s Roundtable in Tokyo (NGRT) was held on March 23rd, 2020 at Roppongi Hills Club, starting off with a keynote address by Mr. Glen S. Fukushima. He is Senior Fellow of Center for American Progress. The theme for the 5th meeting was “Implications of the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election for U.S.-Japan Relations”. Mr. Fukushima firstly stated that the U.S. presidential election 2020 would be the most important U.S. election in the post WWⅡ period, giving explanations on three significant unexpected events surrounding the election: Joe Biden’s “miracle” comeback on Feb 29, Democratic Party unity, and Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. Following his speech, participants discussed three questions addressed: “What are the implications for U.S.-Japan relations of: (a) second Donald Trump Administration? (b) Joe Biden Administration?”, “Which Administration would yield the best results for U.S.-Japan relations?”, and “What should the Japanese government, business community, media, etc. do to prepare for the next U.S. Administration?” Participants examined the current issues from various perspectives, and predicted who would be the next U.S. president and vice president. On the last general comment from Mr. Fukushima, he emphasized the importance of youth political engagement and having an opportunity to discuss issues frankly with the two countries perspectives.
