On January 21st, Mr Kazuo Okamoto, Executive Director of the AJS, held the second special event, focusing on “What I learned from eight years’ tenure in the UK”, which followed the session for the Brexit. Principal topics were on actual degree of the diversity in the UK, very high level of mass media and unexpected level of convenience in daily life etc., all of which were presumably utterly unimaginable from Japan. While both the UK and Japan commonly share the unique characteristics from historical and geographical back grounds on top of the basic principles, such as democracy and capitalism, the UK was explained as a remarkably matured society to the extent that the nation has still sustained the force to be reckoned with. We were really convinced to learn the reasons were firstly special relationships with the US and European countries, secondly abundant number of the friends, i.e. the Commonwealth and the European continent, and thirdly the prevalence of Nobbles Obliges.
