Interview with former Defense Minister Onodera
The 7th monthly meeting of the America-Japan Society in 2021 welcomed former Minister of Defense Itsunori Onodera, a member of the House of Representatives, on April 19, to have a dialogue with Ambassador Fujisaki on Ukraine and Russia, US-China relations, North Korea, Taiwan, and Senkaku. The Minister gave a clear and lucid explanation of the risks that Japan should take into account and the measures that should be taken, and thus taught us many important points when considering Japan’s security under the drastically changing current circumstances.
【Speaker’s Profile】 Born 1960 in Miyagi Prefecture, graduated from the University of Tokyo Graduate School of Law and Politics. After working as a Miyagi prefectural assembly member and as an associate professor at Tohoku Fukushi University, he was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1997. After serving as Parliamentary Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs in 2007, he was twice assigned as Minister of Defense (2012-14 and 2017-18) and currently Chief Director, Committee on Security, HR along with Acting Chairperson, Policy Research Council, LDP. He has been elected eight times.
